Key similarities

Integrated Grinding Technology

Both models use a conical steel grinder that can be adjusted from 1-7 as well as points in between, offering a total of 13 grind settings. The new silent grinder with 13 settings is a feature that can be enjoyed on both of these coffee machines.

Bypass Doser

Both machines also have a bypass doser so you can brew preground coffee (great for decaff or trying different types of coffee). The bypass is located on the top of each machine, it is easy to access and use and comes with a convenient scoop.

Temperature Control

Both models use the Delonghi Thermoblock system to ensure the temperature is perfect for coffee preparation. Both Delonghi Magnifica machines only heat up the amount of water that is needed for the drink that is being prepared.

Front Loading Water Tank

For ease of use, both coffee machines have water containers that can be removed from the front of the machine. This means you can top up the water level without having to move the coffee machine around, it is a simple feature that makes basic tasks hassle-free. Both of the removable water reservoirs can hold 1.8L and each has a water tank has a water filter too.

Ability to Make 2 Cups at One Time

You can make 2 espressos at once with both the ECAM22110sb and the ESAM04110b. Both models also have height-adjustable spouts so you can fit an espresso cup or your favourite mug under the coffee dispenser.

Manual Steam Wand

Both coffee machines have a manual steam wand that is ideal for frothing up milk to make cappuccinos and lattes.

Easy Cleaning

The drip tray and coffee grounds tray can be removed from the front of the machine too. The drip tray uses an indicator system that lets you know when it is getting too full and needs emptying.

The catch trays are relatively small but thanks to their ease of cleaning it is quick and easy to empty them and slot them back into place. On both models, the drip tray grids can be washed in the dishwasher for deep cleaning too.

Key differences

Size

The Delonghi Magnifica S (ECAM22110sb) is more compact and slightly lighter, it offers a slimmer design which is great for smaller kitchens. The dimensions of the Magnifica S are 23.8cm x43cm x 35.1cm while the Magnifica is 28cm x 40.5cm x 36cm making the Magnifica the wider and marginally taller of the two.

Beans Capacity

The Delonghi Magnifica S (ECAM 22 110 sb) offers a larger beans container as it can hold 250 grams compared to the ESAM’s 200 grams capacity. As the coffee beans containers are airtight they keep the beans fresh, lock their aroma in and ensure they are ready for your coffee.

Dispensing Level

The ECAM 22 110 sb also offers slightly more range when it comes to the dispensing volume. The model offers 85 – 140ml while the ESAM 04110b offers 90-120ml.

Display & Controls

The front of each espresso machine is slightly different in design.

The Delonghi Magnifica looks slightly boxier in shape and while there are a lot of similarities, the controls on the Delonghi Magnifica S are better positioned, with clearer labelling making the machine more user-friendly.

The ECAM22110sb also has a display with indicator images to let you know when you need to add water, empty the grounds bin and decalcify the machine.

These alerts are displayed as small labelled indicator lights on the ESAM 04110b which are less clear and less eye-catching.

Making your selection

The Delonghi Magnifica (ESAM04110b) and the Delonghi Magnifica S (ECAM2211sb) are very similar models that each offer all the basics you need to make great coffee in the comfort of your own home.

They both feature a high-quality burr grinder, a manual milk frother and adjustable spouts to suit any mug size and are fantastic automatic espresso machines.

Whether you’re wanting to make flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes or espressos, these are two great options.
