Water and energy. A front loader tumbles clothes through a shallow pool of water; a top loader fills the drum. That single design difference drives the water gap, and because most of a wash's energy goes into heating water, it drives the energy gap too.

Front loaders now come as cheaply as good top loaders. Hisense, Haier and Solt sell 7.5kg to 8.5kg front loaders between about $400 and $650 at The Good Guys with ratings above 4.4. If price was the only reason you were leaning to a top loader, the gap has closed.

Do front loaders get mouldy?
