LG's Series 3 is the one to pick for capacity and water: a 10kg drum using 86 litres a cycle with an eight-year motor warranty, at around $1,100. Samsung's comparable 9kg uses 93 litres, adds steam and a built-in water heater option, and backs its Digital Inverter motor for ten years, at around $1,000.
These two brands dominate the mid-market front loader shelf in Australia and their machines are closer than their marketing suggests. Both are 1400rpm, both 600mm wide, both two-year warranties with a long motor warranty on top.

Samsung 9kg Smart
Nine kilos, 1400rpm, four water stars, five energy stars, 93 litres and 216kWh a year on an EcoCotton 40°C cycle. BubbleWash, Super Speed, steam, a 15-minute quick wash and SmartThings app control. Owner ratings are from The Good Guys. The two machines are rated on different rinse counts, so read the litre and kilowatt-hour figures as label values rather than a head-to-head measurement.
What actually differs
Capacity. Ten kilos against nine. A 10kg drum takes a king doona; 9kg is a queen plus. If doonas are why you are upgrading, LG.
Water. 86 litres against 93, and a half-star of WELS in LG's favour. Part of that gap is LG's extra rinse being counted, which makes the real-world difference smaller than the numbers suggest.
Motor warranty. Ten years against eight, Samsung's way. Both cover parts rather than labour; check the terms before treating either as a decade of cover.
Hot water. LG takes a hot connection directly. Samsung's inverter blends hot water internally. Either saves power over a cold-only machine if your hot water is gas or solar, which is the main reason to care.

Which brand is more reliable?
There is no Australian dataset that separates them credibly. Both sell in very large numbers, both back their motors for the best part of a decade, and both sit between 4.5 and 4.7 in retailer reviews.
Is LG's Direct Drive actually better than a belt?
Direct drive removes the belt and pulley, which are wear parts, and puts the drum on the motor shaft. Samsung's Digital Inverter does the same thing under a different name. Both are the reason these brands can warrant motors for eight and ten years.
Do I need the app?
No. Both machines run fully from the panel. The apps add remote start, cycle download and a notification when the wash finishes, which owners use for the notification more than anything else.
