Series 6 is the step worth paying for, because that is where pyrolytic self-cleaning starts. Series 2 is a capable five-function oven for around $800 with the most owner reviews in the range. Series 4 adds functions and a slightly bigger cavity. Series 8 adds fourteen functions, Wi-Fi and air-fry for around $1,900.

One thing to check before anything else: Series 2 needs 13.8 amps and Series 4 and above need 16, so none of these plug into a normal power point. Budget for an electrician.

Bosch Series 2

Bosch Series 2 60cm oven

Five functions including 3D hot air, a 66-litre cavity, knob controls and EcoClean Direct, a catalytic liner that burns off some splatter during normal cooking. Triple-glazed door. Owners rate it 4.5 from more than 160 reviews at The Good Guys, the largest pool of any Bosch oven there.

The cavity is the smallest in the range and cleaning is still a manual job; EcoClean helps with grease on the liner, not the door or the floor.

What We Like:

  • Cheapest Bosch oven
  • 3D hot air on the entry model
  • 160+ owner reviews

What We Don't Like:

  • Manual cleaning

Bosch Series 4

Bosch Series 4 60cm oven

Seven functions including a pizza setting and bottom heat, a 71-litre cavity, and knobs plus touch control. Owners rate it 4.8 from a small pool at The Good Guys.

It needs a 16-amp supply rather than the Series 2's 13.8, and it still cleans manually. For around $180 over the Series 2 you get five more litres and two more functions.

What We Like:

  • 71-litre cavity
  • Pizza and bottom-heat settings

What We Don't Like:

  • Still no self-cleaning at this price

Bosch Series 6

Bosch Series 6 60cm pyrolytic oven

The first Bosch oven with pyrolytic cleaning: the cavity heats to a high temperature, burns residue to ash, and you wipe it out with a cloth. It also adds AirFry and moves to full touch control, with a 30 to 275°C range. Owners rate it 4.8 from a handful of reviews at The Good Guys.

Pyrolytic cycles use a lot of power and run hot for a couple of hours, so most owners run them overnight or with a window open.

What We Like:

  • Pyrolytic self-cleaning
  • AirFry function
  • Touch control

What We Don't Like:

  • Few owner reviews yet

Bosch Series 8

Bosch Series 8 60cm pyrolytic oven

Fourteen functions, pyrolytic cleaning plus a HydroClean steam program for lighter jobs, Wi-Fi, an automatic temperature proposal, an anthracite enamel cavity and an air-fry grid in the box. Owners rate it 4.9 from more than 20 reviews at The Good Guys, the best score in the range.

It is nearly $1,900 and the cavity is the same 71 litres as the Series 4 and 6.

What We Like:

  • Fourteen functions
  • Pyrolytic plus steam cleaning
  • Best owner score in the Bosch oven range

What We Don't Like:

  • Same cavity size as ovens half the price

What actually differs

Cleaning. This is the whole ladder. Series 2 has a catalytic liner that helps a little. Series 4 has nothing. Series 6 and 8 turn the mess to ash. Anyone who has scraped a roasting tray's worth of baked-on fat off an oven floor knows what that is worth.

Functions. Five, seven, seven, fourteen. Past about seven, the extras are variations most households never select. The ones that earn their place are fan forced, fan grill and pizza setting.

Amperage. Series 2 needs 13.8 amps, the rest 16. Neither plugs in. If a plug-in oven is what you need, Westinghouse and Chef make 60cm ovens that run on a normal 10-amp outlet, covered in Westinghouse vs Chef.

What doesn't change: a 60cm cabinet cutout, five shelf positions, a halogen interior light and a two-year warranty.

FAQs

Is pyrolytic cleaning worth the extra money?

For anyone who roasts meat regularly, yes. The cycle costs a couple of dollars in electricity and replaces an hour of scrubbing with caustic cleaner. For a household that mostly bakes and reheats, the Series 4 is enough.

How hot does a pyrolytic oven get during cleaning?

Around 480°C. The door locks for the cycle and stays locked until the cavity cools. Pets and birds should be out of the room because of the fumes released.

Do these ovens fit a standard Australian cabinet?

Yes. All four are 594mm wide and 595mm high, built for the standard 60cm underbench or wall cabinet. Check the depth of your cabinet against 548mm and leave the ventilation gap the manual specifies.
