A home pizza oven reaches 400°C to 500°C, well past a kitchen oven, which cooks a pizza in a few minutes. Most are gas ovens for the backyard; some burn wood or charcoal, and a few run on electricity. The main differences are the size of pizza an oven takes, how thick its stone is, and its fuel, which decides whether a fire ban day stops it being used.

1. Best Overall: Gozney Arc

Gozney Arc

Gozney's Arc cooks 14-inch pizzas at up to 500°C on a 20mm cordierite floor, thicker than the Ooni and Arc Lite stones here. It measures 480 by 564mm and weighs 21.5kg. Registering it with Gozney within 60 days lifts the warranty from one year to five, according to Gozney.

It is heavier than the Ooni ovens and the Arc Lite, and costs about $450 more than Ooni's 14-inch oven.

What We Like:

  • 20mm stone
  • 14in pizzas
  • 5 years when registered

What We Don't Like:

  • 21.5kg

2. Best Value 14-Inch: Ooni Koda 2

Ooni Koda 2

Ooni's Koda 2 also takes a 14-inch pizza, on a 15mm stone, with a 500°C maximum and, on Ooni's figures, 400°C reached in about 20 minutes. At 16kg it is 5.5kg lighter than the Arc. Amazon stocks it in its Australian warehouse for Ooni; Ooni's own store showed it as out of stock on 28 September.

The stone is 5mm thinner than the Arc's, and Ooni's warranty terms match Gozney's.

  • Shipped by Amazon

What We Don't Like:

  • 15mm stone

Gozney's smaller oven takes 12-inch pizzas: 430 by 481mm, 12kg, with a 12mm floor and a 500°C maximum. Against Ooni's 12-inch Koda 12 it has the thicker stone, weighs 2.8kg more and costs a little more.

It only takes 12-inch pizzas.

What We Like:

  • 12kg
  • 12mm stone
  • 500°C

What We Don't Like:

  • 12in pizzas only

Gozney Dome (Gen 2)

Gozney's Dome burns wood, charcoal or propane on a 30mm cordierite floor, and takes one 16-inch or two 10-inch pizzas at up to 500°C. It carries the same warranty terms as the Arc. Ooni's smaller wood-fired Karu 2 was out of stock at Ooni's Australian store on 28 September.

At 826mm wide and 62kg it needs a stand or a permanent base, and its wood and charcoal modes can't be used on Total Fire Ban days.

How to choose a pizza oven

Pizza size. Ovens are sized by the largest pizza: 12, 14 or 16 inches for gas ovens, and 30cm (about 12 inches) for the electric ones here.

Stone thickness. Stones in the gas ovens here run from 10mm to 20mm, and the thicker ones store more heat.

Fuel and fire bans. On a day of Total Fire Ban, Victoria's CFA bans pizza ovens fired by wood or charcoal in the open air, and the NSW RFS bans wood-fired pizza ovens. Gas and electric ovens can be used with conditions.

Gas safety. Gas pizza ovens are outdoor appliances. NSW Fair Trading warns against using outdoor gas appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, which need more ventilation than a room gives.
