The Barista Express suits anyone who doesn't already own a grinder: for around $150 more than the Bambino Plus you get a burr grinder built in, and that is the single biggest upgrade to espresso at home. The Bambino Plus suits anyone who already has a grinder, or who values automatic milk texturing over grinding fresh.
These two are the most common first serious espresso machines sold in Australia, and they solve different problems. One is a complete bean-to-cup setup with manual milk. The other is a compact espresso unit with automatic milk and no grinder.
Breville Bambino Plus

Compact, three-second heat-up, and a steam wand that textures milk by itself with three temperature and three texture settings. Owners rate it 4.5 stars from more than 550 reviews on Breville's site. It is about 19cm wide, so it fits where the Express won't.
There is no grinder and no hot-water button; hot water comes through the steam wand. Add a burr grinder and single-wall baskets and the total lands well above the Express.
What We Like:
- Hands-free milk
- Narrow footprint
- Three-second heat-up
What We Don't Like:
- Needs a separate grinder
Breville Barista Express

The best-selling espresso machine in the country by review count: 4.7 stars from more than 1,200 reviews at The Good Guys and 4.7 from more than 2,800 on Breville's site. A conical burr grinder with 16 settings sits on top, doses straight into the 54mm portafilter, and a pressure gauge on the front shows whether the shot is running fast or slow.
The heater is a thermocoil rather than ThermoJet, so it takes about 50 seconds to warm up, and you wait briefly again between pulling a shot and steaming. Milk is fully manual. It is also a much bigger machine at around 31cm wide and 40cm tall.
What We Like:
- Built-in burr grinder
- Pressure gauge for dialling in
- Thousands of reviews
What We Don't Like:
- Manual milk, 50-second warm-up

What actually differs
The grinder. Fresh-ground beans matter more than any other variable. With the Express you have it from day one; with the Bambino Plus you need a grinder that costs roughly $250 to $400 on top, at which point the Express is the cheaper package. If you already own a decent burr grinder, that argument flips and the Bambino Plus becomes the better buy.
Milk. The Express is manual only. The Bambino Plus is automatic. Owners of the Express who make several milk drinks a morning are the ones who most often say they wish they had bought a machine with auto milk.
Speed. ThermoJet on the Bambino Plus is ready in three seconds and moves from shot to steam without a wait. The Express warms up in under a minute and needs a short pause between shot and steam. Not a deal breaker, but noticeable in a rushed morning.
Space. The Express needs a spot roughly 31cm wide with clearance above for the hopper. The Bambino Plus fits under most overhead cupboards.
If both auto milk and a grinder matter, the next step up is the Barista Touch, which has both and costs about double the Express.
FAQs
Is the Barista Express grinder good enough to skip a separate grinder?
For most people, yes. It grinds fine enough for espresso with single-wall baskets. The 16 settings are in fairly coarse steps, which is why the later Barista Pro moved to 30, but owners rate the Express 4.7 with the built-in grinder in daily use.
Can I add a grinder to the Bambino Plus later?
Yes, and many owners do. Breville's Smart Grinder Pro is the usual pairing and its dose fits the 54mm portafilter directly.
Which is easier for a beginner?
The Bambino Plus, because the milk is automatic and there is no grind setting to get wrong. The Express has more to learn but also more to adjust once you know what you're doing.
